increase awareness of the mental and physical states of
mind people are in when they practice the Japanese
martial art Aikido.
An atemi is an attitude-changing defensive strike. If
someone is attacking you, they don’t expect you to
attack back, but if you do, their intention changes from
offensive to defensive. The audience is the attacker
and the piece represents the intention and energy of
the surprise attack. This is not intended to cause
injury.
