The Old First Station, Fujiyoshida, Erik Moore

Since the bus line was constructed to the new fifth station, tourists
rarely take the traditional path walking up the mountain from the
city of Fujiyoshida.  After buying a traditional staff at the Northern
Gate Temple on the edge of town, and performing the ceremonial
washing and drinking of sake, I began to walk through the forest
at the base of the great mountain.  I met only one mountain
climbing enthusiast and no tourists all along the way.  The roads
and paths were so poorly marked that several times I considered
that I could be lost.  But I ended up on the right path.  All of the
former way stations below the new bus line had fallen into
disrepair.

Introduction

This series is based on the pilgrimage up Mt. Fuji.  This
immersion into traditional Japan was overlaid with ubiquitous
modern Japanese tourists, casting their own perspective on
the situation.  The contrast between traditional and modern
culture is strong on the mountain, but modern, traditional,
native, and foreigner all exist in a tenuous harmony.
