Welcome to the Center for a Reasoning Society! We're glad you stopped by. If you have any questions or need support, please use our feedback page.

Our membership supports a range of projects including disaster relief programs, cultural literacy programs, and web content that supports reasoning in society. It's a great community where members support each other as we look for opportunities to promote reasoning in society, raise our children, and support humanitarian efforts.

Please check out The Rational Spectrum blog started by David Shever. I'm sure there will be many interesting posts over time: http://therationalspectrum.blogspot.com/2015/12/donald-trump-and-john-lennon-case-of.html and the related facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/rationalspectrum Thoughtful comments on how we reason and how a nation can better reason together are so important as we move towards a major election. David's initial post has already contributed to that discourse.

Two members of CfaRS attended Bioneers this year. It's an organization with some related interests. We had a great time, and here is an update from Kendra Webber.

Have you ever heard of Bioneers? If not, where have you been?

It is an amazing coming together of our larger community. Bionners stands for Biological Pioneers but over the years it has branched out to include so much more then only Biological Pioneers it has become a movement uniting people with a common purpose to help heal and be co-creators of our amazing world.

Bionners brings together inspirational people from a variety of backgrounds who are doing their small part for humanity. You will hear speakers who are leaders in their fields to grassroots activists and organizations making a difference locally and globally. If you want to get educated and learn about issues that are affecting us and others in our community then Bionners is the place to get connected. Getting connected will help you get involved on an issue you are passionate about. If you are not interested in being involved, that is ok. Come be an observer, come hear about the issues. Knowledge is power, so be informed. Bionners is a great place to come be inspired.

Bionners has hosted its 26th Annual Conference in 2015. Check out your annual local Bioneers Conference in October! If you have not been or not heard about it, go and see what it's all about. It is held in California with various locations nation wide broadcasting the plenary speakers to their local conference. Click on the link below to find your closest location. If you live in Colorado, Boulder has just hosted their 13th Annual Bioneers Conference.

Here is an example of some of the topics that have been covered in the past. Not only do you hear from amazing speakers from around the world but the local conferences have workshops hosted by people and organizations in your area. So you can get directly connected and find out what is going on in your community. If your community does not have a conference near you, think about how you can change that.

Find your local conference for next October! See you there.

Aldus Pius Manutius was a great contributor for sure. A humanist who transformed the world of books from secluded and exclusive Gothic texts to small Latin volumes that could be published widely and in the promotion of secular and private discourse. While born in a southern suburb of Rome, Venice was where he did his work.http://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/aldus-manutius-printing-typeface-typography-italics-venice-180956855/

For those who remember Aldus Pagemaker, surely the name was a homage or should have been. Anchor books also, uses his seal. He printed pocket versions of the ancient Greek and Latin classics for all to own. It reminds me of both the Loeb Classics I grew up with, http://www.hup.harvard.edu/collection.php?cpk=1031and the way e-readers and the Internet have made knowledge so much more accessible than when I was small. (Thanks to Sam for the tip on Manutius and Poggio) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poggio_BraccioliniPoggio we all owe a debt of grattitude to, for uncovering Lucretius' De Renrum Natura, which sparked a bright fire in Tuscany that lit the minds of the world, along with many other great classics.

A great review of the national trends towards angrily unreasoned and indignantly uneducated consideration of scientific findings, political decisions, and cultural developments. (Thanks David for drawing this to my attention.)

http://www.humanistictexts.org/al_ma%27arri.htm Forwarded from a good friend, Sam.

I'm just reviewing Al Ma-arri now. In the article it also refers to Carvaka, Xenophanes, and Lucretius. Of course Epicurus comes to mind as well.

Thanks David, an excellent article. I agree completely. Often empathy is the primary motivation to reasoning rather than the counter to it. Thinking emotions and reasoning, compassion and skeptical inquiry are in opposition is surely one of the great false dichotomies of our time.

In this digital age, if you want some help ensuring that kids get an empirical education instead of just simulation, then check out this sit I did a bit ago listing the apps that can turn an iPod, and many tablets and phones into "Tricorders" so that kids can do instrumented scientific projects directly connecting with the world around them and developing a taste for demanding evidence and knowing its value.https://sites.google.com/site/instrumentededucation/

Here's a great site and organization with the goal of defending science. These attacks are generally because of a selfish desire to distort or suppress those findings for selfish reasons, usually so the assumptions of one's social power are not questioned. This can be either ideological or economic power. http://defendscience.org/Check it out.
